Early in the year for a big beauty like this. The splits tell you how crazy hot then wet then back to hot the weather has been.

Noticed a post on North Star’s blog that the first peaches of the year are on their way. Can’t wait to see them at market. Soon… very soon!
Saturday at the Market (June 5)

The habit of taking photographs of North Star Orchards fruit each week last season seems to have stuck with me. Since it’s too early for peaches and plums and apples, I offer you my haul from the West Chester Growers Market this past Saturday, June 5.
A fresh chicken, pasture raised chicken from Lindenhof Farms as well as a dozen eggs (from a different chicken ;) Chicken roasted on Sunday night with lemon, spring onions and parsley and DE-licious
Fava Beans from Queens Farm. Fava beens are crazy, labor intensive to peel; it’s the tough coating on the inner bean that puts them into the only-once-a-year category for me. They are sooo delicious with a little shaved parmesan and olive oil though that I can never pass them up. I first had Fava beans in a spicy puree at a middle-eastern food stand in the financial district in SF years ago.
Rhubarb from Oak Shade Cheese and Strawberries from Blueberry Hill Farm destined for one last strawberry rhubarb pie. For the record, I scored some sharp cheddar from Oak Shade Cheese as well.
Tomatos from Fahnestock Farm, late asparagus from Oak Shade Cheese and a PERFECT, fabulous, brain-tastic Pom-Pom mushroom from Olay Valley Mushrooms. The tomato is of course a bit of a tease for late summer.. greenhouse grown this early in the year but tasty and local.
And last but not least…. Spinach from Red Earth Farm and Red Lettuce from Blueberry Hill Farm. It’s the delicate pinks and reds that draw me into the photos of greens. The spinach is destined for a stew of lentils and spices with coconut milk and the lettuce for fresh, fresh salads.
Not shown… even more Tuscan Kale (or something close in appearance) from Red Earth Farm. Time to get cooking!
